Have you received God's gift?
Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, wrote this letter to the Romans to speak about "the gospel," which literally means "the good news." Let's review some of the things he wrote about the gospel—the good news about God's gift of salvation.
What Is God's Gift?
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth" (Romans 1:16).
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23).
Why Is It Needed?
"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:10).
"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin … all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:19,20,23).
Who Paid For It?
The grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ … so by the obedience of One shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:15-21).
"Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus" (Romans 3:24).
How Can You Receive It?
Just like gifts that we give and receive, one person buys the gift and the other person simply has to receive it. Jesus Christ paid the price for your salvation when He died on the cross and rose again, and now He calls upon you to recognize your need of His salvation and accept it. Won't you acknowledge your need as an "inexcusable" sinner, who is "treasur[ing] up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God" (Romans 2:1,5), and turn in faith to Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord?
Good works will not make you right in God's eyes—salvation is a gift of God's grace, and not something to be earned (see Romans 11:6). But thank God that He is faithful to save all who call upon Him, trusting Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord: "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13).
